Default Is it feasible to make and include mpegs?

Hello modders,

We discussed this a few years ago while I was doing the Norj'Hal campaign, and the answer was "yes, it is relatively simple to do a video capture of the game as it renders on the screen." But, I'm wondering about the download--would people be willing to wait for a 15-20MB larger download if I put some movies in there?

The reason I'd really like to do it this way is that it'd let me get scenes from a whole other map (and tileset) into the cinematics. I've read that Starcraft II will allow us to blend tilesets seamlessly, but I'm not sure if there's still a limit to the amount of tile space we get. More importantly, I want to conserve all the space I can on a map, so having to shoot scenes on separate corners of the map where I've placed terrain from a different tileset is potentially cumbersome. (It gets worse as I would have to hide that corner of the map during the rest of the cinematic.) But, if I can shoot the extra scenes from different maps and play 'em back as mpegs at the precise moments I want, that could work very nicely. We could probably render any game-native sounds separately as the mpeg is playing, and that would help trim the file size.

The scene I'm thinking of right now is a scene in an asteroid field as a massive fleet of terran ships is ambushed and overwhelmed by Zerg. I'm looking to have panoramic scenes in space, so the map will need to be clear of any areas where the tileset changes, but I'd also like to have cut scenes from inside the hangar bay of a battlecruiser as the deckhands and pilots scramble to get their birds into the fight.

I wouldn't think so. I mean, over b.net 15-20 mb is HUGE, and really the only reason I see someone would download that much is an epic single player rpg or something. I mean, at least I wouldn't download 15-20 mb over bnet just to see some sort of scene.

The current map size limit for BNet is 10 mb anyway. :P

Well, that was my intention--to do this as part of an epic single-player RPG. I'm also thinking of making segments of the campaign (individual maps, and particularly the final one) Bnet distributable multi-player maps. So, I guess to those who have responded so far, the question is, would you balk at a 15-20MB download for a single-player RPG?

when downloading a single player RPG the size doesnt really matter in my eyes. the bigger the more quality it has in my eyes.

just try to keep multiplayer maps as small as posible

As long as the size downloaded isn't ridiculous for the quantity and quality of the map, I'm sure people wouldn't complain.

Not always. The larger the map, the more custom content there is. Custom content != high quality.

Especially if all of that extra space is sunk into videos.

You could use mods to store the videos to avoid the 10mb limit, though if it's a singleplayer RPG people probably won't be DLing it via Bnet anyways.
