Default Photon Cycles, a luminous lightbikes game

Photon Cycles, a luminous lightbikes game, is all about driving around your ridiculous looking vehicle, while excreting lethal hazards from your rear, with the intention to cause your enemies to wreck into stuff. That is pretty much all there is to it.

I decided to make the map because I am a fan of this micro-genre or whatever it is; it is fun and competitive, has simple mechanics, and is intellectually stimulating in the nuanced and clever tactics and strategy players can employ. The entelechy of the game is what makes it interesting, in the same way lego blocks and cellular automata and DNA are interesting. I figured I could make something small and neat, like TronCraft Rebirth, only this version won't give people hand cramps from right clicking so damn much.

Special thanks to Sixen and Motive for their feedback, Mexa for publishing in the EU region for me and those brave few who helped test it on Battlenet.

This map is available in NA and EU regions.

Features
  • Mouse-controlled camera and turning
  • Victory types available in 5 tangy flavors
  • Supports up to 12 players
  • Custom Layout for a minimal UI
  • Leavers are removed, start points adjusted
  • More than 100 entirely pointless death messages
  • Dead players spectate the remainder of the round
  • Turbo boost; smash into walls faster than ever

Controls
  • Move mouse to turn
  • Left-click to boost

Quite interesting...

Some questions:
  • the space between walls is random intentionally or it's a game precision issue?
  • The music can be turned off?? or it's just part of the video? (I'm not saying the music is bad, just that after two plays it gets boring)

Overall, a good start

Moyack: From what I know, the space between the walls produced by the bikes is the same as another game (which sreg based the idea off of, obviously). It makes it so that people can go through your walls if they really want to, but they need precision to because the gap is so small. It also adds a few cool gameplay features as well, since the player needs to think of whether he wants to block off the gaps between his walls or not.

The inconsistency in the gaps is a time precision issue; the engine's basic unit of time is 1/32 game second. Times that don't fit neatly are adjusted, so to speak. I may fix this issue in the next major update by increasing the spawn period by about 0.1 game seconds.

The music is part of the video; it isn't mine to use. However, I am accepting donations of music, which would really liven up the map, provided the license on the music permits that sort of distribution.

EDIT: If you're referring to the existence of gaps at all, that's a deliberate game mechanic choice.

This is an archive for music by c418. You might recognize his stuff from minecraft. Anyways, he says:

Can I use your music?

Depends. Anything on this blog you can download for free, yes. As long as you credit me properly. It would be awesome if you’d link to this blog for example.
Any music you have to pay for (not meaning the 1$ flac thingies on bandcamp), no, that’s licensed music.

There are some neat tracks on his site that could fit the vibe of photon cycles.

I looked around a bit a found a number I like.
  • Amen cliche
  • Meatcraft REMIX
  • Inappropriate Transsexuality Delux
  • A Fail
  • Blubb
  • Incredible
  • But I Love You
I need broader sample of artists, though, and then I'll narrow it down to a few from each. So it might be a little while before my map has music.

No sweat, I just remembered he allowed people to use some of his stuff. Anyways, back to portal 2

Ha that's the same music maker that makes the music for Minecraft! Just an interesting fact. Also sreg, care to explain what those are? I'm sure I could figure it out by playing it once (also guessing by their names one is having X amount of lives and the other is a regular deathmatch-type style(?)) but it'll be great to have an actual idea in the description of the map first

In Endurance, you score one point for each second you are alive. In Slayer, you score one point for each kill your barriers get.

In the next update I'll be revamping victory types and dividing them into Score Conditions (Survivor, Endurance, and Slayer) and End Game Conditions (Score, Round, and Time).
