Default Cell Shading

Well, not really. On the other hand....

I'm super tired right now so I don't feel like like typing much, they say a picture is worth a thousand words anyway, right? =)

Nice. How'd you do that? Custom shaders? Or just fiddling with the textures? Man if SC2 supported custom shaders... *drools* Particularly an Outline Shader would be sweet

Also, I can't see your attachments :<

EDIT: I see them now, strange because I was logged in before :/

I pressed the chat gem. :P

I didn't use custom stuff at all. It's a camera "bug" related to the blurriness. It's just too cool to call it a bug though imho.

Yeah, I had the same problem with your attachments, it somehow works after you try it a few times.

Working with the Lightning Editor is a bit tricky in this case, I got a night time and stronger colors to work. Water (which is sadly turning invisible) and a sky would be nice now...

Care to include how units at various scales look in that terrain? Given that level of blurriness, I anticipate units would need to be scaled up a bit to avoid becoming black blobs. That, or reduce the thickness on those edges.

Well this is the nearest I can get (up to now) to cell-shading with the lightning editor... How do you use that bug?

Can't see your picture. =/

Anyway, all you need are the Depth Settings of a Camera.

The "Depth of Field Amount" value needs to be anything other than 0 (it's set to 0 as standard so just change it to whatever).

And set "Depth of Field End" and "Depth of Field Start" both to 0.
They only need to have the same value actually, so 5/5 or 10/10 would work too.
That's about it.

If you play around with "Depth of Field Depth" you can also change the range of the effect, as in when it begins or when it ends. I managed to get a sky to show by ending the cel-shading far away. So you can basically have cel-shading in the foreground and the normal graphics in the background (or the other way around).

Also managed to get a halfway decent water effect. Looks better in motion. :P

It's not like the units get smaller, the black edges appear around the units. I think it's the form of the units that matters more. Since it's a bug I doubt that it's possible to change the thickness of the edges.

Map attached.
(Yes, the terrain tiles are crazy as hell from most camera perspectives, notice how I've only shown almost top-down and very close to the ground shots so far)

Gotta admit, the only cel-shading here that doesn't complete screw over the graphics is MC!'s attempt. The rest just don't look very good.

If you don't like cel-shading then it can't be helped.
